According to The New York Times, the actor skipped the ceremony because he chose to travel to Europe this week with the goal of reaching Ukraine. He was the only nominee absent and had also missed the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the BAFTAs earlier this year, despite winning at both ceremonies. Penn’s history of solidarity with Ukraine goes back a long way. In 2022, he described the country’s defense against the Russian invasion as “the tip of the spear for the democratic embrace of dreams,” adding, “If we allow it to fight alone, our soul as America is lost.” That same year, the actor lent Zelenskiy one of his Oscars—the one he won this afternoon is his third—promising to leave it in Kyiv until Ukraine’s victory in the war. A year later, he told Variety that he had considered melting down his two statuettes to use as ammunition for Ukraine and also filmed a documentary about the Russian invasion. Nor is this the first time Penn has skipped the Academy Awards. He did so in 1996, 2000, and 2002, when he was nominated, and only attended the ceremonies when he finally won the Best Actor award for Mystic River in 2004 and for Milk in 2009. However, with his win for Mystic River, he admitted to Newsweek magazine that he only attended the ceremony because he was “embarrassed” when Clint Eastwood, the film’s director, accepted his Golden Globe in his place that same year. Penn has always used his position to make political statements. In his Oscar acceptance speech for Milk, for example, in which he portrayed gay rights activist Harvey Milk, he criticized people who voted to ban same-sex marriage, stating that it was a good time for them to reflect and anticipate “their great shame” and the shame they will see reflected in the eyes of their grandchildren if they continue to support that position. Tonight marked Penn’s sixth Oscar nomination and third win. He was the overwhelming favorite to take home the award, ahead of the other nominees Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value; Jacob Elordi for Frankenstein; Delroy Lindo for Sinners; and Benicio Del Toro for his role in One Battle After Another.
